400,000 pounds of food collected so far during San Diego Food Bank’s ‘Summer Food Drive’
CBS 8 (July 14, 2026)

The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank’s 16th annual Summer Food Drive is helping provide nutritious food to children, families, seniors, and other neighbors throughout San Diego County. During the summer, children are out of school and may no longer have access to school meal programs, creating additional pressure for families already navigating the high cost of living.

San Diego Food Bank Director of Corporate & Community Engagement Julie Moore and PNC Bank Regional President Alan Prohaska discuss the importance of community support and PNC Bank’s sixth year sponsoring the Summer Food Drive. They also highlight the easy ways San Diegans can help, including purchasing a $5 Hunger Bag at participating Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions stores or donating shelf-stable foods at Food Bank red barrels throughout the community.

The Summer Food Drive is supported by PNC Bank, Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, Sempra Foundation, Albertsons, Vons, Pavilions, and CBS 8.

September is Hunger Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about food insecurity and help break the stigma surrounding the need for food assistance.

At the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, more than 400,000 people receive food assistance each month through the Food Bank and its network of more than 450 nonprofit partners. Food Bank Director of Corporate & Community Engagement Julie Moore discusses the realities of hunger in San Diego County, including the misconception that food insecurity only affects people who are unemployed. The Food Bank’s work also focuses on nutrition, with fresh produce making up 50% of the more than 53 million pounds of food distributed last year.

Food insecurity affects communities throughout San Diego County, and rising living costs, transportation expenses, medical bills, and changes to food assistance programs can all add pressure to household budgets.

September is Hunger Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about food insecurity and the challenges many people face accessing nutritious food in San Diego County.

Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank Community Engagement Manager Kayla Thomson discusses the growing need for food assistance and the misconceptions surrounding hunger. A $150,000 matching gift from Neurocrine Biosciences is giving San Diegans an opportunity to make twice the impact for neighbors experiencing hunger. Through Aug. 1, every dollar donated to the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank is matched, helping the Food Bank provide even more nutritious food to people throughout the community.

Food Bank Community Engagement Manager Kayla Thomson explains how matching gifts stretch donor dollars, the many ways the Food Bank sources food, and the importance of fresh produce. Last year, the Food Bank distributed more than 52 million pounds of food, including millions of pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables.

The Food Bank’s Summer Food Drive has also brought in approximately 400,000 pounds of food through donations at participating Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions stores. While the Summer Food Drive has wrapped up, the need for food assistance continues year-round.

Neurocrine Biosciences Matches Donations to Fight Hunger in San Diego
The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank is receiving approximately 400,000 pounds of food through the 16th annual Summer Food Drive, providing an estimated 330,000 meals for people in need.

The food is being delivered to the Food Bank after community members purchased $5 Hunger Bags at participating Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions stores. Food Bank Director of Corporate & Community Engagement Julie Moore explains why community support is especially important during the summer, when children are out of school and no longer have access to school meal programs. Changes to SNAP and CalFresh benefits, along with the high cost of living, are also adding pressure for many families.

The Summer Food Drive continues through July 28, and there are many ways to help, including donating food, organizing a community food drive, hosting a virtual food drive, making a financial contribution, or volunteering.
