The annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive returns Saturday, May 9, giving San Diegans an easy way to support neighbors facing hunger. Residents are encouraged to leave a bag of nonperishable food items next to their mailbox, where local letter carriers will collect donations along their regular routes.

Now in its 34th year, the nationwide effort organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers helps stock food banks and pantries ahead of the busy summer months, when donations often decline and need increases. Last year alone, more than 127,000 pounds of food were collected locally for the San Diego Food Bank and community partners.

Hunger can affect anyone — working families, single parents, seniors, and college students — and the need continues to grow across San Diego County.

Casey Castillo, CEO of the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, and Gala Co-Chair Jennifer Anderson share how the organization is responding to rising demand and why community support matters more than ever.

They also highlight the Food Bank’s sold-out annual Gala on Saturday, May 2. The event raises critical funds for the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program, which provides nutritious, easy-to-prepare food to elementary school students facing hunger every weekend during the school year. With more than 3,700 children served each week, this program ensures students return to school nourished, focused, and ready to learn.

Even if you can't attend the Gala, there are still ways to make an impact, from supporting donation matches to participating in online auction opportunities.

Together, the community continues to show up in meaningful ways to help ensure no neighbor faces hunger alone. Learn more or get involved at https://www.sandiegofoodbank.org/gala.

In honor of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary, a generous donation is making a meaningful impact for military families across San Diego County.

An entire semi-truck filled with 40,000 pounds of food was delivered to the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, thanks to the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and JustServe. This large-scale contribution will help provide meals for approximately 1,400 military families, many of whom are facing financial challenges amid rising costs of living.

San Diego County is home to one of the largest military populations in the country, and the need continues to grow. Each month, the San Diego Food Bank supports thousands of active-duty military members, veterans, and their families through its military initiative and network of nonprofit partners.

This donation will be distributed through the Armed Services YMCA at Camp Pendleton, helping ensure families have reliable access to nutritious food during a time of increased demand.

Partnerships like these highlight the power of community support and the difference it makes for those who serve our country.

More than 400 families in Chula Vista received critical food support thanks to a nationwide effort to address childhood hunger. Through a partnership between the Popeyes Foundation, Feed the Children, and the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, each household received enough groceries to help feed their families for up to two weeks.

The event was part of a multi-city tour bringing food and resources to communities identified as having high levels of need. In San Diego County, where rising costs continue to strain household budgets, many families are working hard to make ends meet while ensuring their children have enough to eat.

With additional support planned in the months ahead, partners are continuing to work together to ensure children and families have access to nutritious meals year-round.

New federal policy changes are expected to impact thousands of San Diego County residents, with an estimated 13,000 people losing CalFresh (SNAP) eligibility immediately and tens of thousands more in the months ahead. Many of those affected include lawfully present individuals such as refugees and asylum seekers, creating new uncertainty for households already navigating high costs of living.

The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank says it is preparing for increased demand, working closely with more than 450 nonprofit partners to expand food access in communities most impacted. Leaders note that food assistance remains available to anyone in need, regardless of changes to federal benefits.

With demand already rising and distributions moving faster, the Food Bank is scaling up food purchases and outreach efforts. Community members can also play a role by volunteering, donating, or hosting food drives to help ensure families continue to receive reliable support.

As gas prices continue to rise, more San Diego County families are facing difficult tradeoffs, often cutting back on groceries to cover essential expenses like transportation. Local leaders say this pattern is driving increased demand for food assistance across the region.

The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank is serving more than 400,000 people each month, with that number continuing to climb. Rising fuel and food costs are also impacting food banks directly, increasing operational expenses at the same time demand is growing.

Through a network of more than 450 nonprofit partners and hundreds of monthly distributions, the Food Bank is working to ensure families can access food close to home. Community support remains essential, with opportunities to volunteer, donate, or host food drives helping sustain hunger-relief efforts during periods of economic pressure.
