The County of San Diego is expanding food assistance through a new $1 million food distribution initiative designed to support families as changes to CalFresh benefits increase the need for emergency food assistance.

Julie Moore, Director of Community Engagement at the San Diego Food Bank, discusses how the Food Bank is partnering with the County of San Diego and 211 San Diego to identify communities where demand is expected to grow. Starting this August, the initiative will bring regular food distributions to neighborhoods across the region, providing fresh produce and nutritious food to residents without eligibility requirements.

The program will focus on 16 high-impact ZIP codes throughout San Diego County, including El Cajon, Chula Vista, Oceanside, and Kearny Mesa, helping ensure families have greater access to food close to home. Together with county partners, the San Diego Food Bank is working to meet increased community need while making food assistance as accessible and welcoming as possible.

A one-acre farm in Jamul is making a lasting impact on hunger across San Diego County.

Disabled Marine veteran José "Papa Joe" Silva has dedicated his family farm to growing fresh, locally produced fruits and vegetables that help feed neighbors experiencing food insecurity. Through the San Diego Food Bank's Farm to Family program and its partnership with Foodshed Cooperative, produce from local farms like Papa Joe Farm is distributed to families throughout the region.

Together, participating farms provide hundreds of thousands of pounds of fresh produce each year, helping ensure children, families, seniors, veterans, and individuals have access to nutritious, locally grown food while also supporting local agriculture.

This story also highlights the San Diego Food Bank's Summer Food Drive, which helps meet increased demand during the summer months when children lose access to school meals.

As part of Nexstar Media Group's annual Founder's Day of Caring, employees from FOX 5/KUSI volunteered at the San Diego Food Bank to help prepare food for families experiencing food insecurity across San Diego County.

Julie Moore, Director of Corporate & Community Engagement at the San Diego Food Bank, highlights how volunteers packed emergency food bags and sorted fresh produce for the Emergency Food Assistance Program (EFAP), a USDA-supported program that provides nutritious food through the Food Bank's network of nonprofit partners. Together, the volunteers helped prepare enough food to support approximately 500 families.

Volunteer support plays a vital role in helping the San Diego Food Bank distribute millions of pounds of food each year to children, families, seniors, veterans, and individuals throughout the region.

Summer can be a difficult time for families experiencing food insecurity, as children lose access to school meals and household expenses continue to rise. The San Diego Food Bank is once again partnering with Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions for its 16th annual Summer Food Drive to help meet that need across the region.

Casey Castillo, CEO of the San Diego Food Bank, and Courtney Carranza of Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions discuss how the community can support the effort through $5 Hunger Bags available at checkout in more than 70 local stores. Each bag provides essential pantry staples that help stock Food Bank shelves for families, seniors, and individuals in need.

Community members can also donate nonperishable food items through the Food Bank’s iconic red barrels in select stores or give online to support hunger relief efforts throughout San Diego County.

New federal work requirements for CalFresh are taking effect across California, creating new eligibility rules for some people who receive food assistance benefits. As these changes roll out, many residents have questions about who is affected and what exemptions may still apply.

Josue Castro, Manager of Direct Services at the San Diego Food Bank, explains how the Food Bank's CalFresh Outreach team is helping community members understand the new requirements, determine eligibility, identify possible exemptions, and navigate the application and renewal process.

As families adjust to these changes, the San Diego Food Bank remains committed to connecting neighbors with food assistance and available benefits throughout San Diego County.

The San Diego Food Bank's 16th annual Summer Food Drive is helping ensure children, families, seniors, veterans, and individuals experiencing food insecurity have access to nutritious food during the summer months.

Julie Moore, Director of Corporate & Community Engagement at the San Diego Food Bank, and Courtney Carranza of Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions discuss how the community can make a difference by purchasing a $5 Hunger Bag at checkout. Each bag contains the Food Bank's most-needed shelf-stable foods, including canned vegetables, beans, tuna, peanut butter, pasta, and macaroni and cheese.

As children lose access to school meals during summer break, community support becomes even more important. Last year, shoppers purchased more than 110,000 Hunger Bags, helping stock Food Bank shelves throughout San Diego County.
