Community leaders gathered at the 211 San Diego call center to announce the launch of a new countywide initiative, "San Diegans Helping San Diegans," designed to strengthen access to essential services as uncertainty grows around federal funding cuts.

211 San Diego provides free, 24/7 access to trained community resource specialists who connect residents to food assistance, housing support, healthcare, utility payment help, employment services, childcare, and military and veteran services. CEO William York shared the new campaign will raise awareness about available resources while helping address service gaps created by reductions in federal health care and nutrition funding.

The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank was highlighted as a key partner in that effort. CEO Casey Castillo underscored the importance of CalFresh as a foundation of food security and noted 211’s role in helping households apply for and maintain benefits.

With more than 1,200 agencies in its referral network, 211 San Diego's services are available to people of all ages and backgrounds and tracks changes to ensure residents remain informed and supported.

The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank is kicking off its February Spread the Love campaign, inviting San Diegans to help fight hunger during one of the most challenging months of the year for food donations. The nut butter drive focuses on collecting peanut butter and other nut and seed butters — protein-rich, shelf-stable foods that families rely on and that are among the Food Bank’s most-requested items.

The campaign is launching alongside a major contribution from International Relief Teams, which donated nearly 29,000 pounds of nut and seed butters to support families facing food insecurity across San Diego County. These high-impact items will move quickly through the Food Bank’s network of more than 450 nonprofit partners serving children, families, seniors, veterans, and active-duty military. Food Bank leaders say community participation, paired with strong nonprofit partnerships, plays a critical role in ensuring nutritious food remains available when demand stays high.

Ways to give:
• Donate online. $20 = 12 jars of peanut butter or nut butter!
• Host a nut butter drive, either in person or virtually.
• Donate unopened jars of peanut butter or other nut butters at drop-off locations across the county.

As the new year begins, the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank is reminding the community that the need for food assistance continues well beyond the holiday season. Following the success of the annual Holiday Food Drive, the Food Bank is launching Spread the Love, a February campaign focused on collecting nut butter to help families facing hunger across San Diego County.

Peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, and other nut butters are protein-rich, shelf-stable, and among the most requested items by households served by the Food Bank and its nonprofit partners. Community members can participate by donating jars at red barrel locations throughout the county, dropping items at the Vista or Miramar warehouses, or making an online gift. Leaders say the campaign is an important reminder that more than 400,000 people rely on food assistance each month, and continued community support makes that help possible.

Ways to give:
• Donate online. $20 = 12 jars of peanut butter or nut butter!
• Host a nut butter drive, either in person or virtually.
• Donate unopened jars of peanut butter or other nut butters at drop-off locations across the county.

The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank wrapped up its 45th annual Holiday Food Drive with incredible support from longtime grocery partners Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions. Throughout December, shoppers across San Diego County joined the effort by purchasing $5 Hunger Bags at checkout, helping stock our shelves during the critical winter months.

This year’s campaign highlighted the dedication of store teams who engaged their communities one conversation at a time. At Carlsbad Pavilions, cashier Kay helped sell 1,426 Hunger Bags, raising $7,130 for hunger relief. At Mission Hills Pavilions, cashier Roberta sold 1,242 bags, generating $6,210 in support. Their efforts reflect the power of community partnerships and frontline champions who turn everyday moments into meaningful impact.

With semi-trucks full of food throughout this month, the Food Bank is better prepared to serve neighbors in need throughout the winter and into the spring.

Meals on Wheels San Diego County is launching a new program, Groceries on the Go, in partnership with the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. The collaboration expands support for homebound older adults by delivering additional groceries alongside prepared meals already brought to their doors.

While Meals on Wheels provides daily meal delivery and wellness checks, the new program helps fill critical gaps, including breakfast items and easy-to-open, shelf-stable foods that support daily nutrition and medication routines. With food insecurity rising among seniors, especially those living on fixed incomes, the partnership combines Meals on Wheels’ trusted doorstep connections with the Food Bank’s large-scale sourcing and distribution network. Together, the organizations are working to reduce hunger, combat isolation, and help older adults across San Diego County stay nourished, healthy, and supported in their homes.
