As a fourth generation San Diegan, Stephen Cushman has continued the Cushman family tradition of service to our community. He has been actively involved with over 70 Boards and Commissions and is committed to making San Diego an even better place to live.
He is currently serving as Chair of the Sharp Memorial Board of Trustees, a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Downtown San Diego Partnership, Chair of the Committee on Downtown Homelessness and as Co-Chair of the Advisory Board of the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, among others.
Mr. Cushman holds a degree in Business Administration from California Western University. He began his career in publishing and then progressed into the travel industry for 25 years. During that time, he established his automotive dealerships, the Cush Automotive Group, and was a recognized leader in the automotive sales industry up to its sale in 2006.
Mr. Cushman served as Commissioner for the San Diego Unified Port District from 1998 to 2010 and was Chairman in 2002 and 2009. Some of his past leadership roles include member of the Board of Directors of the American Red Cross and the Greater San Diego Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Board of Sharp HealthCare System, the San Diego Convention Center Corporation, the San Diego International Auto Show and served as special assistant to four City of San Diego Mayors.
He was named Mr. San Diego in 2013 by San Diego Rotary in addition to receiving the 2011 San Diego Hotel-Motel Association Gold Key Award, the 2010 San Diego Port Tenants Association Maritime Award, the 2009 San Diego Hall of Champions Community Champion Award, the 2001 San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau Special Recognition for Extraordinary Leadership & Support of the Tourism Industry in San Diego. He was named Volunteer of the Year in 2019 by the Downtown San Diego Partnership at the 57th Annual Alonzo Awards; awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by National University on June 30, 2019 and named a San Diego Influential Business Leaders Icon by the San Diego Business Journal in 2020 & 2021.
Mr. Cushman currently resides in San Diego with his wife, Marjorie. He is the proud father of two daughters, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
