- Volunteers must provide 24 hours notice of cancellation or notice of increase/decrease in group size.
- Volunteers must schedule a shift – no walk-ins will be accepted.
- Individuals convicted of a violent crime or any type of domestic abuse will not be accepted as volunteers.
- The San Diego Food Bank will only consider misdemeanor offenses. Case number must be provided (see application)
- Court mandate or community service must complete additional documentation and verification with appropriate agency and will be validated by the SDFB.
- Court ordered time cannot be substituted for donations; however you can do both.
- All matters pertaining to clients will be considered strictly confidential.
- Volunteers must not report to the San Diego Food Bank (SDFB) under the influence of alcohol or any other mind altering drug/substance
- Dress is expected to be appropriate. Nothing that may be a safety hazard will be permitted (i.e. loose fitting clothing or jewelry, open-toed shoes, sunglasses). If applicable, nametags must be worn at all times.
- I agree to accurately record my volunteer time on the attendance sheets in each department. I must notify my department supervisor or Volunteer Coordinator as soon as possible if delayed or unable to keep my schedule.
- If I have a question or a problem, I will go to the Volunteer Coordinator or department supervisor.
- When representing the San Diego Food Bank in public, I will act responsibly and professionally, upholding the mission of the SDFB.
- No forms of harassment will be tolerated. The San Diego Food Bank is committed to providing a work environment where women and men can work together comfortably and productively, free from all forms of harassment, sexual or otherwise.
- I understand that information contained on my application will be verified by SDFB. I understand that misrepresentations or omissions may be cause for my immediate rejection as an applicant for a volunteer position with SDFB or my termination as a volunteer.
- Eating is allowed only in the SDFB lunchroom or outdoors. Food in the warehouse is not for volunteer consumption. There is no smoking in the warehouse or lunchroom at any time. Smoking is allowed outdoors 100 feet away from the building.
- Report any accidents or injuries to your immediate supervisor or the Volunteer Coordinator. Report all injuries including minor injuries such as bruises or scrapes. Fill out an accident report provided by your supervisor.
- Volunteers must be six years and older. All groups of children from six through ten must be accompanied by one adult per every four children.
In return the San Diego Food Bank agrees to:
- Provide adequate job training.
- Provide adequate space and good working conditions.
- Maintain record of my volunteer hours.
- Provide references and/or confirmation of hours worked (with advance notice).

- The Volunteer Coordinator will provide further information on these policies through the use of Volunteer Manual (located in the reception area) or individually based on request.
Safety standards and emergency procedures
The San Diego Food Bank strives to ensure a safe workplace, and it is the responsibility of each volunteer to adhere to the following:
- Work according to good safety practices as posted, instructed and discussed.
- Refrain from any unsafe act that might endanger oneself, the people we serve or co-workers.
- Use all safety devices provided for your protection – failure to comply with safety requirements could result in immediate dismissal.
- Report any unsafe situation or acts immediately to your supervisor.
- Fires or emergencies should be reported to the supervisor. If evacuation is called for, volunteers should use the closest unaffected exit in a quick and calm manner. Move as far away from the building as possible for your safety and make room for emergency vehicles.
