Volunteer Job Description

Title
Food Stamp Outreach Volunteers

Purpose:
Given San Diego’s low Food Stamp participation rate, the San Diego Food Bank’s new Food Stamp Outreach Program is helping more San Diegans sign up for Food Stamps. We are currently recruiting volunteers to help pre-screen our clients for Food Stamps at the Food Bank’s food distributions. As a volunteer you will provide a brief explanation about the Food Stamp program to attendees, discuss eligibility requirements, dispel common myths about Food Stamps and help those who are eligible fill out the application.

VOLUNTEER AVAILABILITY:
Volunteers who join the program will be expected to volunteer at least one day per month for a three hour shift. Shifts are typically in the morning from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. and in the afternoon from 11.30 a.m. until 1.30 p.m.

Duties and responsibilities:

Volunteers who join the outreach team will be expected to:

  • Attend a one-hour training session. The session will train volunteers on the Food Stamp application process, eligibility guidelines and Food Stamp pre-screening software.
  • Understand and explain the misconceptions, fears and myths about Food Stamps.
  • Attend Food Bank distributions (a minimum of one three-hour shift per month) and assist our recipients with the Food Stamp application process.
  • Maintain client confidentiality.

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Ability to work well with others including Food Bank staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to perform direct outreach services.
  • Willingness to work with diverse communities.
  • Bilingual (helpful but not required).
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn new software program.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to commit to one three-hour shift one day per month.

Supervision:
Food Stamp outreach workers will work closely with the Programs Coordinator.

Orientation/training:
Must attend one training session prior to community outreach. Call to book a place at the next training session.
