HOW TO HOST A SUCCESSFUL FOOD DRIVE

Thank you for your interest in coordinating a Food and Fund Drive! The San Diego Food Bank relies heavily on these drives to help keep our shelves stocked so that we can provide food to more than 250 charity agencies and distribution sites year-round. Here are some ways to make your drive a success.

Step #1 Plan Ahead
…Recruit a team to coordinate the drive. Make sure to involve someone from every level of your group or organization. Works as a team to determine the length of your drive; start and stop dates are important!

Step #2 Get Management Committed…Encourage leaders to get involved by putting out a company challenge or by matching employee donations. Some companies match donations by giving one dollar for every pound of food collected.

Step #3 Set A Goal…Goals are a great way to encourage teamwork. They can also provide your group with a sense of accomplishment at the end of the drive. Your goal should be fun and easy to understand, such as "matching your weight in pounds of food". Don't forget to mark your progress! Monitoring success will help build momentum.

Step #4 Promote Your Drive
…Let employees know that the drive is happening and encourage participation by putting up posters and flyers and send out weekly email reminders. There are lots of way to get creative with promotions!

Step #5 Build Awareness and Visibility…Hunger is a critical issue in San Diego County. Use your Food and Fund Drive as a way to increase awareness and give people an opportunity to help. Distribute information about the Food Bank and San Diego hunger statistics, take a tour of the Food Bank, volunteer, and send staff a link to our website: www.sandiegofoodbank.org.

Step #6 Make it Fun
…Get creative by utilizing competitions and themes. Use challenges such as 'raising your weight in food' to promote giving. You could also host 'Tuna Tuesdays' or 'Fruit Fridays' to encourage a variety of donations.

Step #7 Celebrate Your Success
…Thank those who participated by having a raffle or distributing prizes to individuals or departments at the end of your drive. Publicize your success by letting the community know how many pounds of food and dollars you raised to fight hunger.
