San Diego – After 200 shows throughout San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles over the past 12 months, local kid’s music duo, Hullabaloo, are saying thank you to their hometown with a concert at the Lyceum Theatre in Horton Plaza. The duo, made up of singer and guitarist, Steve Denyes, and percussionist, Brendan Kremer, is part of the growing number of artists that have found a way to honor and entertain kids with music that won’t drive the parents crazy. With Godfrey the Magician opening the show, admission is $5 plus one non-perishable food item.
Made possible by the generous support of local sponsors including The Parent Connection, Rattle-n-Roll, Kidsville Playland, Stroller Strides, Java Mama and Thinker Things, ALL of the ticket price will be donated to the San Diego Food Bank’s “Food For Kid’s Backpacks Program.”
Piloted in November 2006, San Diego Food Bank (SDFB) created the Food 4 Kids Backpack Program to alleviate any hunger pangs school-age children might suffer on the weekends. While many children of lower-income families receive free breakfasts and lunches during the week at school, the weekends often go overlooked. The Food 4 Kids Backpack Program provides backpacks filled with shelf-stable, child-friendly foods to nourish these children until they return to school on Monday.
“In a city as prosperous as San Diego, it’s hard for many of us to imagine that kids are going to bed hungry,” said Kremer. “We’d really like to help raise awareness about this problem and, at the same time, collect enough food and cash donations to make a genuine impact.”
Unfortunately, 813,000 people in San Diego County will experience some form of food insecurity this year. SDFB provides more than 10 million meals to those in need through 260 local charities and distributors, with 48 percent of those meals delivered to people under the age of 18.
“We are truly grateful for Hullabaloo’s support and generosity,” said SDFB Executive Director Jim Jackson. “Steve and Brendan are two very talented musicians and upstanding individuals.”
There is no doubting the talent of this unique duo. Hullabaloo recently won the Parents’ Choice Award for their album, “Sing Along With Sam,” and their newest release, “Hey, Everybody!” has been greeted with strong reviews and radio airplay throughout the United States and Canada.
“We’ve had a great year,” said Denyes. “We just wanted to find a meaningful way to say thank you and give something back to the community that has provided us with so much.”
Tickets to the concert are available through the Lyceum Theatre box office by calling 619-544-1000. For more information on Hullabaloo visit www.hullabalooband.com.
