| Councilman cites Food Bank's challenges

Today, over 300,000 San Diego County residents are living below the federal poverty level. The need for donated food is increasing. The San Diego Food Bank is working hard to identify new sources of food while meeting a growing demand. Expanded food drives, new business and community partnerships help the Food Bank obtain and distribute more than 11 million pounds of food.
The Food Bank provides enough food for more than 22,000 meals each day of the year. Our statistics on needy and deserving individuals and families are alarming, from 50 percent of recipient households made up of at least one employed adult, to choosing between paying for food and paying rent or mortgage. The Food Bank's Food 4 Kid's Back Pack Program provides food to children to eat over the weekend when they do not have access to free or reduced priced meals at school. The program started in 2006 serving 50 children, and today serves 250 while adding additional children as funding is received. The Food Bank does an amazing job during challenging times. Board Chairman Mitch Mitchell and the board provide strong leadership and support to a dedicated staff. Donations of food, funds and volunteers time are sound investments for all of us.
